Matcha Matcha Matcha

From its verdant green hues, captivating flavour, ancient history and health benefits, Matcha is a drink that embodies mindfulness as well as physical and spiritual wellbeing.

I've been starting my mornings with Matcha for years! I love the mindful practice of slowing down and dedicating time to be present to enjoy one of life's simple pleasures. The ritual of preparing a Matcha Tea is one that I love so much that I just had to source some of the world's finest Matcha as one of Fox & Wren's offerings.

What is Matcha? Matcha is a Green Tea sourced from Japan with its ritual dating back thousands of years. The region best known for Matcha is Uji, where artisans have been growing and harvesting Matcha with traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. Our Matcha is made from the youngest and finest leaves that are individually handpicked from shade-grown tea trees, artisan roasted and milled into a fine powder.

Health Benefits of Matcha: Not only is Matcha delicious, it's also really good for you! Unlike regular green tea where the tea leaves are brewed and then discarded, when you drink Matcha you're consuming the entire tea leaf, ensuring that the full benefits of green tea are available to you. Matcha is shade grown for 30 days before harvest and as a result of this unique harvesting technique, it contains increased levels of chlorophyll and amino acids compared to regular green tea. Matcha is the perfect go to drink when you need a sustained energy boost without the jittery effect and crash that many experience with coffee. Matcha is also an antioxidant powerhouse that is said to assist brain function, improve metabolism, aid detoxification, promote heart and liver health, lower cholesterol and strengthen the immune system among many other benefits.

What do I need to make a Matcha? The traditional tools for the preparation of a Matcha are a Bamboo Scoop known as a Chashaku, a Bamboo Whisk known as a Chasen and a Whisking Bowl known as a Chawan. The Bamboo Whisk is an absolute must as the tiny Matcha leaf particles are not water soluble, meaning they won't dissolve in water or milk. Unlike a standard metal whisk, a Bamboo Chasen will suspend and separate the Matcha quickly without any clumping as they have far more prongs. A Bamboo Chasen will also aerate and froth your Matcha to the perfect texture.

Brew Guide: Measure approximately 1/2 teaspoon or 2 Bamboo Scoops of Matcha into Matcha Bowl. Of course add more if you prefer it stronger. Add roughly 80ml of hot but not boiling water (70°C) and thoroughly whisk with Bamboo Whisk in a zigzag motion until smooth and frothy. Pour your shot of Matcha into your favourite drinking cup or glass and enjoy.

For a Matcha Latte, prepare your milk of choice with the steam wand on a coffee machine, a milk frother or by heating the milk on a stove and pour over your shot of Matcha to create a Latte. Add pure honey or maple syrup to sweeten if desired.

I invite you to experience this powerfully calming, grounding and mindful ritual.
